Procopius, The Secret History, Folio Society book
Procopius: "The Secret History", a Folio Society book translated by G A Williamson with an introduction by Philip Zeigler.
The work is believed to have been originally written in AD 550.
This translation was originally published by Penguin Books in 1966, and this book is a first edition Folio Society hardback dating to 1990.
The book comprises 151 pages including index, illustrated with colour plates mainly depicting Roman mosaics. The pink buckram hardback cover features a mosaic design and the book is protected with a pale green slip cover.
The theme of this writing is an almost personal vendetta against the Emperor Justinian and his family by a high-ranking civil servant, whop pinpoints faults in the characters of emperors as the principal cause for the downfall of the Roman Empire.
This insight into the the decline of the Empire would be a must for the student of classical Rome, as well as an informative read for anyone interested in the period. Whatever, the look and feel of a nicely bound illustrated book like this makes a read a little bit more special.
Condition is good, with no significant marks or scuffs to the book although the spine to the book is faded.. The slip cover is also in good condition with slight marks and fading with age.
